"Swiss" is the most powerful word in watchmaking, and the most loosely used. If you're shopping for an Arabic watch with a Swiss movement, here's what the label actually tells you, and what it doesn't.

Swiss movement vs. Swiss made

They aren't the same thing.

  • Swiss movement means the engine inside the watch was made in Switzerland. Ronda and ETA are the best-known Swiss quartz makers.
  • Swiss Made is a legal label. At least 60% of the whole watch's manufacturing cost has to come from Switzerland, and the movement must be Swiss, cased and finally inspected there.

A watch can have a genuine Swiss movement without carrying the Swiss Made label. That's normal at this price, and it's honest as long as the brand says "Swiss movement" and nothing more. Be wary of anyone using "Swiss" on the dial without explaining which one they mean.

Why the movement matters

The movement is the part you can't see and the part that decides whether the watch keeps time for years.

  • Japanese quartz (Miyota, Seiko) is reliable and accurate, and powers most good watches at accessible prices.
  • Swiss quartz (Ronda) is a step up in finish and consistency, with movements built for long service lives and easy servicing anywhere.
  • Automatic movements need no battery. They wind from the motion of your wrist and have a sweeping second hand instead of a tick.

What else to check on a Swiss Arabic watch

A Swiss movement in a weak case is wasted money. Look at the full build:

  • Case: 316L stainless steel is the grade to look for. It resists corrosion better than 304 and holds plating better.
  • Glass: sapphire crystal is far more scratch resistant than mineral glass.
  • Dial: check that the Arabic hour markers are crisp and properly printed or applied, not a pattern added for decoration.
  • Warranty: a brand confident in its movement will cover it for at least two years.

Where LANNUR fits

Every LANNUR watch runs on a Japanese or Swiss movement. Each piece is checked, prepared and boxed by hand in Australia before it ships, and every watch carries a 2-year warranty.

Something new is coming: our first watch built entirely in 316L steel, with sapphire crystal and Swiss quartz. One dial, made for him and for her. Subscribers see it first.
